Dolly Peel: Rebel on the Tyne
An evening of 4 original plays with music:
The Smuggler's Daughter by Emma Zadow
Cleaning Up by John Dawson
Finding Dolly by Tom Kelly
Dolly Peel of Shadwell Street by Janet Plater
Now in its third year, Customs House's 'First Play Club' returns with a bold new production inspired by South Tyneside’s legendary rebel, Dolly Peel. Four original short plays, each by a different writer and underscored by stunning new songs, reimagine Dolly’s story; smuggler, healer, protector, through fresh perspectives that blend history with modern voices. Celebrating heritage, pride, and identity, this project brings the fierce heart of South Tyneside to the stage.
A joy to work in the North East for the first time professionally, having grown up in Sunderland.
"Dolly Peel Rebel on the Tyne isn’t just theatre; it’s South Tyneside on stage, fierce and unapologetic, daring us never to forget where we come from."
